He co-founded Elm Street Tattoo in Dallas, home to the world-famous Friday the 13th marathon tattoo events, and later opened True Tattoo in Los Angeles, both of which have become meccas for traditional tattoo lovers.

Jimmy Snaz, born James Mackenzie in Boston, Massachusetts, is a celebrated tattoo artist known for his bold, graphic, and instantly recognizable style. Carlton “Buddy” Mott (1924–2014) was more than a tattoo artist — he was a pioneer, craftsman, and storyteller whose work helped shape the culture of American tattooing. A proud WWII veteran and self-taught artist, Buddy blended the skills of an engraver, sign-painter, carver, and painter into a tattooing style that was bold, timeless, and unmistakably his own.
In 1948, Buddy opened Buddy’s Tattoo Shop in Newport, Rhode Island. For nearly six decades, his shop became a landmark — a place where sailors, locals, and travelers alike came to leave with more than just ink on their skin, but a memory and a story that lasted a lifetime. His chair saw generations pass through, each marked by his steady hand and enduring artistry.
Buddy’s dedication and influence were recognized in 1994 when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Tattoo Association, honoring his place among the greats of the tattoo world. To this day, his work and reputation stand as a reminder of an era when tattooing was equal parts grit, art, and tradition.
